The Exchange

Chicago, Illinois

About the Project

Renovating one of Chicago’s most architecturally significant properties – Daniel Burnham’s Railway Exchange – involved breathing new life into the building’s interior. Embracing the classic ornamentation and working with that natural light that filled the 3-story atrium, Northworks’ interiors team transformed the indoor space into a virtual outdoor oasis.

In collaboration with award winning chefs, art consultants and audio engineers Northworks created dining spaces that activate the entire atrium and adjacent spaces. Throughout the Atrium, glass doors on surrounding bars and restaurants give the effect of streetside entries, while custom built faux olive trees and rattan chairs invite visitors with a relaxed park-like ambiance. In The Listening Room, Northworks designed a bar & lounge specifically for an immersive music experience, with plush area rugs and upholstered seating to enhance acoustics and in Theo’s Restaurant, luxe light fixtures and moody tones compliment custom commissioned artwork.
