Northworks is a full service architecture and planning firm, offering new building design, historic preservation, site planning, construction management, building conditions analysis and interior design, including custom furniture. Northworks is LEED accredited and licensed to practice architecture in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
All members of Northworks strive to maintain a studio environment of inspiration and creativity where clients, consultants and contractors all work together in the design and execution of a wide range of building types. Their commitment to the details of process, from conceptual planning to construction administration, leads to sound methods of practice and production.
Since establishing their practice in 2005, Austin DePree and Bill Bickford have combined their visions of architecture as concept, profession and way of life. A mutual fascination of the built world inspires them to develop their own style of practice that balances innovative design with sensible execution. Their shared passion for creating lasting architecture through collaboration is the foundation of Northworks.

- Melissa Aust
Melissa began her career at a firm where she gained experience in restaurant and residential design. At Northworks, she is currently working on a townhome project in a northern Chicago suburb. Melissa received her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. While in school, she had the opportunity to study micro-housing design in her hometown at the Nashville Civic Design Center. Melissa is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is pursuing her architectural license.

A principal at Northworks, Robert’s portfolio of work includes a diverse range of custom residential, commercial, office, institutional and hospitality projects. Currently, Rob is working on custom single family residences in Lake Forest, IL and a historical renovation in Washington, DC. He is a licensed architect in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin; a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a LEED accredited professional. Robert received his Bachelors of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
- WILLIAM T. BICKFORD, AIA, LEED AP
A founding partner of Northworks Architects & Planners, Bill Bickford oversees a variety of residential, commercial, and institutional projects at the firm. His recently completed work includes the restoration of Graceland Chapel in Chicago, a custom residence in Hobe Sound, Florida, and a solar-powered farm development in western Wisconsin. Currently, Bill is working on various building projects for the Sand Valley Golf Resort, an executive retreat for the Sub Zero Wolf Company, a net-zero energy home in the Joshua Tree Desert, and a collection of custom residences along the North Shore of Chicago. Bill is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is licensed to practice in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Colorado, Florida, and Wyoming. He is a LEED accredited professional and is NCARB certified. Bill received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a board member of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Trustee of Graceland Cemetery, and a member of the Dean’s Council of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.

A founding partner of Northworks, Austin is dedicated to the successful realization of a wide range of project types at the firm. He believes in a rigorous and disciplined design process that provides transparency to his clients while ensuring the creation of purposeful, efficient and lasting architecture. His recently completed work includes a range of custom homes in Illinois, Wyoming, Texas and Michigan. His current projects include two new homes on the shores of Lake Michigan, a new private residence in Jackson, WY and several new condominium towers in downtown Chicago. Austin is NCARB certified, a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a registered architect in Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming. Austin received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. Among other professional organizations, Austin currently serves on the Executive Board of Elawa Farm in Lake Forest, IL.
- Molly Nauman Douglas, AIA
Molly is a licensed architect in Illinois with residential and institutional experience in a variety of project types—from adaptive reuse and historic preservation to site planning and new construction. For the past six years, she has worked on projects in and around Chicago and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Molly received a Masters in Architecture from Miami University of Ohio and a Bachelors of Art in Art from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Garrett, originally from Detroit, gained his design and technical experience from his involvement in a wide range of projects throughout the Chicagoland area. He is currently working on a vacation home in Hobe Sound, FL and a modern farm in Solon, Iowa. Garrett is a LEED accredited professional. He received his Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan.

- KEVIANDA HUGGINS
Kevianda oversees the office management at Northworks. Prior to joining the firm, she worked for Chicago Public Schools where she served as Project and Facilities Manager and as Program Coordinator, coordinating continuing education courses for Principals and Teachers in 3 school districts. Kevianda has an Advanced Certificate in Organizational Management from Stanford University; and is currently furthering her education in Operations Management.
- Adam Janak, AIA
Adam serves as director of the Northworks Studio in the Town of Jackson. After receiving his Master’s of Architecture from the University of Idaho, Adam began his career at Hoyt/CTA Architects Engineers where he grew from AIT to Project Architect and Associate. Adam has had his work published in numerous publications and won the 2014 AIA Wyoming – Award of Citation. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is Chair of the Town of Jackson’s Planning Commission.
- Keith LaButta, AIA
Keith is a licensed architect within the State of Illinois having worked on a diverse project range throughout his career. Project types include Single and Multi-Family Residential, Educational, Hotels, Restaurants, Historic Preservation, Commercial Offices and Libraries. As a member of Northworks, his projects have been included in publications such as Luxe Home and Chicago Tribune among others. Current projects include the renovation and restoration of two historic estates along the north shore of Chicago. He received an Honor Award in 2014 from AIA Pittsburgh, winning the Young Architect Competition. Keith received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Pennsylvania State University.
- NATHANIEL A. LIELASUS, AIA
Nate has worked on a variety of projects throughout the Chicagoland area and the Midwest. His experience includes office build-outs, historic preservation, retail, and high density residential. Nate is an architectural docent at Second Presbyterian Church and a contributor to the blog Chicago Modern: More than Mies. He was involved in the Graceland Cemetery Chapel restoration and is currently working on residential projects and private club renovations around Chicago. Nate received his Master of Architecture from Tulane University and is a licensed architect in the state of Illinois.
- Myriam Migrditchian, AIA, LEED AP
Myriam has worked on residential, institutional, commercial, historic renovation, and retail projects in in California, Pittsburgh, Boston and Chicago. She is currently working on custom single family residences in Chicago’s north shore suburbs. Myriam has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago and presently engages in community public-interest design through the non-profit Architecture for Humanity. Myriam is an Illinois licensed architect and a LEED accredited professional. She received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
- Sarah Neville
Sarah is an Illinois native who loves Chicago and everything it has to offer. She has worked in several Chicago-based firms and on a wide variety of projects, ranging from small residential additions to hospitals. She is currently working on two custom homes on Chicago’s North Shore. Sarah received her Masters of Architecture from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is actively pursuing licensure.
- RACHEL OLEINICK, AIA
Rachel is a licensed architect in Illinois with nearly ten years’ experience in residential construction, ranging from low-cost multi-family adaptive reuse to custom single-family new construction. Prior to joining Northworks, she worked at Tigerman McCurry Architects, and was project manager for the award-winning “House of Planes” vacation home in western Michigan. Her current work includes custom single-family residences in the north shore. She received her Bachelors of Architecture from the Pennsylvania State University. Rachel is a member of the American Institute of Architects and Chicago Women in Architecture.

Jason has experience working on a number of retail, commercial, industrial and residential projects in Chicago, California, Hawaii and Mexico. He is currently working on several residences in the Chicagoland area including the Orchard Street Residence. Jason received his Bachelors of Architecture from Drury University in Missouri and is currently pursuing his architectural license.

Brian has worked on a variety of residential, institutional, and commercial projects throughout the Midwest, Chicago and California. He is a LEED accredited professional and is currently pursuing his architectural license. Brian received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame.
- Gwen Sutton
Gwen began her career in Chicago working at a small firm in the South Loop, focusing primarily on hospitality projects. She joined Northworks in early 2016 and is currently involved with commercial and residential projects in Northern Wisconsin. Gwen earned her Bachelor of Architecture with a specialization in Landscape Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology and is working towards professional licensure.
- Rachel Wray Thompson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Rachel’s background is built in a deep knowledge of modern and sustainable building practices. She has served as project manager for residential, LEED Platinum residential, commercial, airport and historic preservation projects. Rachel is licensed in Illinois and is a LEED accredited professional. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Miami University, where she was awarded for her work on the design-build of a women’s marketplace in Ghana, Africa. Rachel is also a daily editorial contributor for Apartment Therapy.
- Amme Willis, AIA
Amme began her career in New Orleans working on residential and hospitality projects. She later moved to Chicago and worked on both residential and commercial projects throughout the city. She graduated with her masters of architecture from Tulane University and is a licensed architect in the state of Illinois.
- JOHN D. ZEIEN, AIA
A principal at Northworks, John has overseen the successful completion of a variety of project types. His experience includes residential and hospitality work in Chicago’s Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and River North neighborhoods, historic preservation work in St Louis, and the construction of custom homes in central Wisconsin and Texas. John came to Northworks after working for a smaller boutique design firm in New York City. He holds both Bachelors of Architecture and a Bachelors of Arts in Graphic Design degrees from Drury University; and he is licensed in Illinois.
